Maria Ramadas, Be Cool Project Coordinator, is our special guest at the next TIS Parent Coffee Time, Thursday, 19 January, 8:30am, in the Secondary Library.

Maria will tell TIS parents about the Be Cool Project, a place for Macao's youth. The project is a centre dedicated to awareness, learning and discovery with drums, drama, cooking, yoga, writing, art lessons and many other activities. The centre is open daily and is an initiative of the ARTM. ARTM believes that with proper help and guidance youth will make positive choices away from drugs and risky behviours. The Be Cool Project believes that it is extremely important to talk and share problems and for that there is counselling for young people, parents and community members through the facility.

This is an important presentation for all parents, particularly parents of teenage children.

Christmas Gifts for Orphanages

TISPA (TIS Parents' Association) is inviting the school community to provide Christmas gifts for children in orphanages in Macao.

The Christmas Tree in the foyer of the school has tags with ages and sex of children written on them. Take a tag, purchase a gift, wrap it, place the tag on the present and put it under the tree, by Wednesday, 14 December.

The gifts will be distributed to orphanages around Macao, prior to the school breaking up for Christmas holidays.

TIS to support UNICEF Halloween Fundraising Campaign

TIS will support the UNICEF Halloween Fundraising Campaign, helping rebuild the lives of children affected by the earthquake in April, in Yushu, Qinghai.

Our help goes a long way e.g. HK$20 can buy 250 vitamin A capsules used to prevent vitamin A deficiency.

Last year, the TIS community raised over 10,000MOP.

Students should see their teachers to receive the permission slip to apply for a UNICEF donation box.

Experience Week 2012

TIS Experience Week, 10-17 March, 2012

Planning is well underway for the 2012 Experience Week trips.

Experience Week is an off-site program during which TIS students exchange their classrooms for trips and activities of a lifetime. Through adventure activities and cross cultural interactions, students gain valuable hands-on learning experiences, grow in independence and gain a better understanding of the universe around them.

Students may decide to undertake an internship at 5 selected Macao businesses during this week. This experience is valuable for university applications and future careers. Walk-a-Thon - UPDATE

PK and JK will take part in the walk-a-thon today (Friday, 14 October) from 9:30-10:30am, in the MPR. Parents are welcome to come along and cheer along.

SK-Grade 6 - the walk-a-thon will not take place today due to the rain. Another date will be scheduled and a notice will be sent home to parents informing of the new date.

TISPA (TIS Parent Association) warmly welcomes any interested parents to consider letting their names stand for any of the various positions on the TISPA executive. Nomination forms, information and a box are available in the school foyer.

Get involved in TISPA’s aim “to support the school in its efforts to provide a well-rounded educational environment for the students as well as fostering a sense of school community.”

Last day to accept nominations is Monday, June13 and elections will be held at the TISPA Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, June 14, 2:00 pm, TIS Administration.

Exam and Study Hall for Secondary Students

During secondary exam days, June 22 – 24, students are required to be at school only during their exam times and are free to leave campus once their exams are completed. We have a supervised study hall available in the secondary library and computer lab for students to use when they are not writing exams should they choose to do so. If parents require their child to remain on campus and use the study hall, they must inform the homeroom teacher and we will ensure that attendance is taken and the child is in study hall.

Congratulations to TIS Tigers Senior Girls' Soccer Team

The TIS Tigers Senior Girl's Soccer Team, after just two months of training and fund raising, traveled to Kaoshiung, Taiwan on the weekend (14 to 17th April) to participate in an ACAMIS tournament against schools from Taiwan, China and Hong Kong. Most of the girls, fresh from a successful basketball campaign were eager to participate in and learn a new sport. With limited opportunities for Friendly matches before the tournament and playing in a tournament division two above where they should have the challenge was always going to be great.

The girls played extremely well and improved with every game in the tournament.

The team was awarded at the tournament banquet for their sportsmanship and terrific attitude.

Mulan Musical

Students from the Primary School have been working hard to get ready for the Spring Musical - Mulan Jr. which is based on the Chinese poem "The Ballad of Mulan".
In the story, Mulan is a young girl who pretends to be a boy to fight against the Huns in place of her father It is a story of honour, strength, love, destiny and loyalty.

The performances will be held at the Sands Theatre.

Primary Track & Field Results

All elementary students at TIS competed in our 3^rd Annual Track & Field Carnival in early March. All students worked hard to prepare for their events in classes prior to the competition and each put forth their best effort during the meet. TIS Donates to Queensland Flood Victims

Grade 6 student Trae Robin presented a cheque for over $HKD6000 to Mr Gavin McDougall, Director of Public Affairs, Australian Consulate-General, at the Primary Assembly, 2 March. The monies were raised by the TIS community during our Chinese New Year concert for flood victims in Queensland, Australia. Local media attended the event and the presentation was aired on TDM.

Chinese New Year Performances

Parents are invited to attend the TIS Chinese New Year performances by the whole school on Wednesday, 19 January, from 9:15-11:15am.

Performances will take place in the new MUST Gymnasium (high school students will direct parents from TIS to the location).

This year parents will have dedicated seating and you will be ushered to your seat by students when you arrive at the venue.

Students and Mandarin teachers have been working very hard on their performances and we'd love to see as many parents come along as possible. There is ample seating.

After the performances students will be collecting donations from parents towards our fundraising efforts for the victims of the devastating floods in Queensland, Australia. Your support would be appreciated.

Great results for TIS

The 2009 PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) results are in and the news is very good for TIS. When compared to the country averages, TIS scored very high. TIS students earned top results in Reading, Literacy and Mathematics Literacy. Only Shanghai, China, outperformed TIS students.

The PISA 2009 study assessed 15 year old students’ literacy in reading, mathematics and science. Approximately 470,000 students from 65 countries took part in the test.

Many people assume that the PISA tests are conducted in English. In fact, the test is conducted in over 40 different languages. Students write the test in the language that their school instructs them in. All TIS students wrote the testing English despite the fact that many have a different first language.

These results are another indicator of the effectiveness of the TIS program. Teachers, students and staff can take pride in these results. “I am very proud of our students and teachers for these excellent results. We are confident about our comprehensive literacy program and the teaching strategies that we use,” stated Mr. Stribbell, Head of Schools.

TIS is committed to improving literacy in all students and through all course subjects. Literacy has a significant effect on performance in school and post secondary study. Students who read well tend to perform well in school and university. All teachers, not just Language Arts teachers, are committed to improving literacy throughout the school.

Successful Infocus Photo Exhbition

Congratulations to students on their successful photographic exhibition at the Venetian. Opening night, 19 November, was aired on the local television station TDM.

Students are studying photography, animation, graphic design and video production in class. This was the first opportunity for them to display their work.

The opening night was a huge success and the positive feedback on work very encouraging.

Thank you to Mr Whyte for arranging the event and Mr Loney for arranging the space at the Venetian.

Primary students will receive book catalogues in their newsletter, Friday, 12 November.

Dates for ordering books are 19-29 November. Books ordered during this time will give TIS a 20% credit on any books the school orders.

The Senior Boys Soccer Team will be competing at the Canidrome on Sunday, 14 November at 2:00 P.M against the Escola Luso-Chinesa Tecnico-Profissional. Come and cheer them on to victory!

The Cross Country Team, featuring students from Grade 4 to Grade 12, will be competing on Sunday, 14 November from 8:00 a.m to 12:00 noon at their annual meet at Guia Hill.

Walk-a-Thon, 15 October

It’s that time of year again! We will be holding our annual school Walk-A-Thon on Friday, 15 October, during morning school hours:-

Pre K and JK 9:30-10:30am on the Artificial Soccer Pitch (by the MRR)

SK – Grade 6 9:30-1030am on the MUST Track

The Walk-A-Thon is a fundraising event, however, it has become one of the highlights of the school year. Funds collected are used to pay for guest speakers and artists to visit the school, exciting field trips and special educational days.

Along with this letter, you will also find a pledge form. Pledges can come in the form of donations or a “per lap” basis. We encourage students to only seek pledges from parents, friends, relatives and neighbours they know. We do not encourage children to go door-to-door or approach strangers.

When seeking pledges, students should go with an adult and explain politely the purpose of the Walk-A-Thon. We request that they not ask staff members or other students in the school.

Students are required to wear their PE uniform on the day of the Walk-A-Thon and will need a hat and water bottle.

We invite all parents to come out and cheer on their children the day of the event.

Kid City Colouring Competition

Kid City are inviting students to participate in their spooky colouring and drawing competition from 1-25 October. The colouring competition is open to ages 2-6 and the drawing competition for ages 7-12. 20 winning artists will be invited to the Halloween Fancy Dress Party on 31 October.

Curriculum Night - PARENTS ONLY

Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to invite all parents to attend our Curriculum Night on Thursday, 9 September, from 6pm to 8pm. Curriculum Night is an excellent opportunity to find out what your child will be studying this year. NOTE: this night is for parents only - please leave your children at home.

The Alberta curriculum is a rigorous curriculum that nurtures the whole child, culminating in grade 12. Come and learn why universities such Hong Kong University, Leeds University, Sheffield University, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, University of Alberta, University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, City University Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong are accepting students who graduate from TIS.

If you are unable to come, I invite you to find out more about our curriculum by accessing the many resources at the Alberta Education homepage.

Tigers Sport Roars Forward at TIS!

2010-2011 is going to be a great year for sport at TIS! This year we will have a new part-time Athletic Director (Mr Nick Fundytus) and full-time Athletic Coordinator (Mr Terry Iu) at the school, and many specialist coaches.

A new dedicated TIS sports homepage has been developed, where parents and students can find information on teams, fees and practice days. Most of the TIS tournament and team sports are for Grades 4-12.

The athletics department will create a system of intermurals for students too young to play on tournament teams.

The programme has 12 confirmed teams, with coaches, and several more to be arranged in the coming months. Team members may have the opportunity to play in tournaments in Hong Kong, China and Mongolia, as TIS is now a full member of the ACAMIS organization of international schools.

An information night will be held for parents on 16 September in the MPR.

Information for TIS 2010-2011 School Year Start Up

Greetings TIS families! I hope you are enjoying the summer break. The following information will assist all of us in having a smooth start to the new school year.

There will be orientation days for grades 4-6 students on Monday, August 30th from 10:00am to 2:00pm and for JK to grade 3 students on Tuesday, August 31st from 10:00am to 2:00pm. During these times, parents and students can drop by the school to meet their new teachers and see their classrooms. This is an informal drop-in format, where parents and students can find out about their new teachers, classroom routines, and expectations. Students are not expected to be at school from 10:00am to 2:00pm and parents should not drop their children off at this time.
Pre-Kindergarten students will be following a staggered entry format again this year. Each Pre-K student and parent has been given an individual appointment with their teacher either on August 30th or 31st. Each child will then come to school in a small group on one of the following days: Sept. 1, 2, or 3. All families have been notified of these dates. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Atherton. All Pre-K students will then begin regular classes on Monday, September 6th.
Classes for students in grades 7 to 12 begin on Monday, August 30th with classes commencing at 8:25am. Students in grades 10 to 12 should drop by the school on August 26th or 27th in the afternoon to meet with the new secondary counselor, Ms. Hubert, to finalize their course selections if necessary.
Classes for students in grades 4-6 begin on Tuesday, August 31st with classes commencing at 8:30am.
Classes for students in JK to Grade 3 begin on Wednesday, September 1st with classes commencing at 8:30am.
If you are planning on using the bus service to transport your child to school, please contact Chong Ou Travel Agency at 28357659 as soon as possible so that the bus routes can be set before the last week of August. You can also pick up bus service registration forms in the school office. To avoid any confusion about which bus your child rides on, Kindergarten and Elementary parents should let the school office and the child’s homeroom teacher know the bus number that the child rides on. The bus
number should be the same for morning pick up and afternoon drop off.
For families living in Coloane who would like bus service, please drop by the office to register your children for the TIS bus service.
Kiss and Ride will begin on Monday, August 30th. If you wish to utilize the Kiss and Ride service, please drop by the school office to fill out a form. We will issue you a new Kiss and Ride visor tag and instructions on how it operates at that time. Kiss and Ride is for parents wishing to drop their children off at school without coming into the school themselves. Parents wishing to park their vehicles and enter the school should park in the parking lot adjacent to the MUST stadium. Parents/drivers should not double-park on the street in front of the school as this congests the traffic flow. Parents who used Kiss and Ride last year and wish to continue will need a new visor tag.
MUST entry permits – If you drive your child to school, please drop by the office to pick up a MUST entry permit. One permit will be issued and must be placed on the vehicle’s windshield to be allowed entry to the MUST campus. In the past, many people misused the TIS entry permits and parked on campus to go to work at nearby businesses. Last year, MUST changed its regulations regarding entry permits. Those who want an entry permit must pay a refundable deposit of 1000MOP for cars/vans or 500MOP for motorcycles. Parking will be limited to 2hrs. If a parent requires longer parking, they may request a special permit from the office. For full details of the new MUST policy, please drop by the school office.
Parents have two options for student lunches: they can buy into the Red Spot lunch plan (attached) or they can send lunch with their child in the morning. There are many insulating lunch containers available in stores that will safely store students’ lunches. Helpers will not be allowed into the school foyer at noon to drop off lunches. Take away foods (ie. McDonalds) is discouraged at the school. If you wish to treat your child, you may make arrangements to pick up your child for lunch. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Uniforms can be ordered at Pan Pan in Macau. We have maps available at the school to help you find the shop. As well, parents can drop by the school office to buy hats, bags, and second hand uniforms. This year all students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6 must wear a school hat when playing outside. Also, this year only TIS jackets will be allowed. There is a new PE shirt available. The original white PE shirt may still be worn.
Class lists and homerooms will be posted in the front foyer on August 26th. The school cannot entertain requests for specific teachers or classes.
A reminder that school fees can be paid using a variety of methods: You can pay at the school office using a credit card or cheque, pay over the counter at BCM, or use BCM autopay. If you have any questions about fee payments, please ask Rita or Yvonne in the office.
If there have been any changes to your personal information, including address, phone number, work visa, or your child’s passport or Macau ID, it is very important to get this information to the school as soon as possible. During the first week of school, we will send information update forms home with your children and ask that you update the information and return the sheet to the school so we can update your child’s records.
Please check the school website www.tis.edu.mo regularly as any updates and information will be posted there. As well, please be sure that the office has your updated contact information, so that we can contact you throughout the school year if necessary.
The school office is open all summer, so avoid the line ups at that the start of the school year and come in early to take care of all the necessary paperwork.
